PyroMED is participating in the VII Concurs de Divulgació Científica organised by the Universitat de les Illes Balears (UIB), an initiative that encourages researchers to bring their work beyond academic journals and closer to society.
The challenge: explain research clearly, rigorously, and accessibly to people outside your scientific field.
For PyroMED, this is closely connected to our mission.
Wildfire research is often communicated through technical reports, scientific papers, and conferences. While these formats are essential for advancing knowledge, the people most affected by changing fire regimes are rarely the people reading scientific journals.
Fire affects landscapes, communities, land managers, policymakers, and ecosystems. Understanding fire therefore requires not only producing knowledge, but also sharing it.
Science communication can help bridge the gap between research and society by making complex ecological processes more accessible without losing scientific rigor.
Participating in the VII Concurs de Divulgació Científica is an opportunity to experiment with new ways of communicating research and to connect scientific knowledge with broader audiences.
The initiative is organised by the UIB’s Unitat de Divulgació i Cultura Científica in collaboration with The Conversation España and the FECYT.
Whatever the outcome, the experience reinforces an important idea behind PyroMED:
Research has greater value when it can travel beyond the scientific community.
Science should be part of the conversations we have about the landscapes we live in.
The VII Concurs de Divulgació Científica is organised by the Universitat de les Illes Balears and aims to promote the communication of university research to wider audiences.
